Chapter Ten

Dale washed sexual residue from her hands and inspected a mottled bite mark on her shoulder, one of several her shirt would need to hide when she dressed for work. She hovered in front of the bathroom mirror, puzzling over the stroke of luck—or not—that made her attractive to women. Some of her short-term girlfriends had theories about why they were drawn to her and liked to expound on these by way of accounting for the time they’d wasted trying to have a relationship with her. The X-factor. Pheromones. Body language. Androgyny. Dominance. Butch attitude. Good hands. Fond of animals. Dale had also encountered women who loved the idea that she was a cop. These groupies were all about the fantasy and wanted the usual role-playing. After spending most of her working day trying to arrest people in real time, Dale found the idea of slapping handcuffs on a lover routine, to say the least. So those liaisons didn’t last long.She knew, from the second glances she received, that she wasn’t bad looking. Being tall, confident, and in shape helped. She also dressed well and had a decent hairdresser, even if he constantly bemoaned her boring style and her failure to invest in highlights. He didn’t understand the desire to blend in, but Dale had found out, early in her career, that if she wanted to be taken seriously on the job, looking like she spent half her life fixing her hair was unhelpful.

She turned off the faucets, dried her hands, and took a last look in the mirror. Nothing in her facial features stood out. She’d inherited her father’s long nose and determined jaw. Every time she looked in a mirror, his candid gray eyes stared back at her. She liked that.

Flicking off the light, she hovered in the bathroom doorway, waiting for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. She could just make out Giselle’s shape on the bed. Like the baby in her painting, she slept curled up on her side. A few hours after their last lovemaking, Dale had attempted to spoon with her, but Giselle had shuffled away. Dale wasn’t offended. She liked to sleep alone, too. Usually, she had a hard time with companions who needed to be all over her.

Mystified by her rare urge to cuddle, she padded across the wood floor and slid into bed. Giselle didn’t stir, and Dale almost laughed at her own disappointment. Briefly she considered waking the sleeping woman so they could make love again. But she’d already given in to the same powerful urge twice and would feel bad about dragging Giselle from a deep sleep a third time. Suppressing her desires, she rolled away from temptation and hunched restlessly on the edge of the bed.

Giselle’s body needed some recovery time, she reasoned to further douse her desires. What kind of oaf would insist on having her way when sex was becoming uncomfortable? Dale was just perverted enough to allow herself a smile. She liked that she was the oaf responsible for Giselle’s tender state.
